Background

  • Temporomandibular joint is an important articulation primarily involved in chewing as well as in speaking and in vital functions such as breathing.
  • The problem in temporomandibular joint was referred to as “Costen Syndrome” in 1990 and as “temporomandibular myoarthropathy” in subsequent years. Today, the term “temporomandibular dysfunction syndrome” is used to define such conditions.
  • Not having the knowledge of to which specialist and to which health care facility to go is a major issue for the patients with temporomandibular joint problems.
  • Indeed, physicians of various branches have dealt with the temporomandibular joint problems in the past. Today, it is accepted that the problems of temporomandibular joint requires the collective efforts of various departments and it is not managed only one branch.

Purpose of Establishment

  • Considering the above-mentioned facts, Diagnosis and Treatment Division of Temporomandibular joint Disorders in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department of Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine, was established in 1990 by Prof. Dr. Cihan Aksoy.
  • The establishment purpose of the Diagnosis and Treatment Division of Temporomandibular joint Disorders is to provide patients having temporomandibular joint problem with proper diagnostic and therapeutic opportunities by bringing together specialists from various departments and to provide the patients and the community with accurate information.
  • Diagnosis and Treatment Division of Temporomandibular joint Disorders established in our department is the first and the only multidisciplinary unit in this field.

What We Do

1- In Diagnosis and Treatment Division of Temporomandibular joint Disorders, the patients are evaluated collectively by;
  • Physical therapy specialists
  • Dentists
  • Plastic surgeons and
  • Psychiatrists.
2- Specialists from other departments are also involved in this process, when needed.

3- Patients directed to the Diagnosis and Treatment Division of Temporomandibular joint Disorders are asked to complete a form in which they are able describe their problems in detail.

4- Then, range of mouth opening is measured; if exist, joint sounds are auscultated and a detailed manual examination of the joint is performed by the attending physician.

5- After obtaining anamnesis and performing physical examination, the patient is collectively evaluated by the dentist, plastic surgeon and psychiatrist under the supervision of the attending physical therapy specialist.

6- As the result of this evaluation, investigations such as X-ray, MRI, EMG, measurement of biting power are requested and the diagnosis is established.

7- Proper treatment is selected and applied to the diagnosed cases.

8- The treatments include:
  • Manual therapies (i.e. manipulation, mobilization, post-isometric relaxation)
  • Drug therapies
  • Dry needling / acupuncture
  • Local injections
  • Intra-articular lavage (irrigation of joint)
  • Intra-articular injections
  • Injection of botulinum toxin
  • Special jaw exercises
  • Physical therapy to the jaw joint and joint stretching with special equipment
  • Arthrocentesis
  • Splints (plastic mouth guards)
  • Odontotherapy (performed in dentistry)
  • Psychiatric drug therapies or psychotherapy (given in psychiatry department)
  • Surgical therapies (performed in plastic surgery department)
9- Patients admitted to the treatment program are asked to come for control visits with certain intervals.

Working Days
Diagnosis and Treatment Division of Temporomandibular joint Disorders works on an appointment calendar and serves on Thursdays between 13.00-16.30.


How to Apply?

After scheduling an appointment from Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department of Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine, by dialing 0(212) 414 20 00, patients examined by the physician in the outpatient clinic are directed to the Diagnosis and Treatment Division of Temporomandibular joint Disorders, if indicated.
