Background
First injection in the world was performed at the beginning of 20th century and first intra-articular injection was performed in 1950s. Specialty Injection Outpatient Clinic in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department of Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, which is the first specialized outpatient clinic in our country, was established by Prof. Dr. Cihan Aksoy in 1990.

Purpose of Establishment

The purpose of establishment of this outpatient clinic is to successfully practice special injection methods used in the diseases of musculoskeletal system and to provide maximum patient satisfaction.

What We Do

  • The term “specialty injection” implies the injections that can only be performed by trained specialists under certain circumstances. It is far different than the injections routinely performed into the gluteal region by the nurses and other health care workers
  • In special injections, drug is delivered to and around the joint, to and around the ligaments, and lumbar, cervical and sacrococcygeal regions. Special injections to such regions involve also withdrawal of excess fluids, tissue sampling and intra-articular lavage
  • Special injections are performed under sterile settings due to contamination risk (using sterile gloves and materials) and when needed, in the operation room with the guidance of imaging techniques
  • When the patients are admitted to the specialty injection outpatient clinic, a form is completed for each patient about his/her problem and the patients are followed with certain intervals after the injection
Special injections are recommended in which diseases?
  • Osteoarthritis of knee, hip, ankle, shoulder, elbow, wrist and finger joints (in order to reduce pain, to prevent disease progression and to reduce the rate of surgery)
  • Cervical pain and lumbar pain unresponsive to standard treatment
  • Diffuse or regional muscle pains
